Effects of Interdisciplinary Training on MCH Professionals, Organizations and Systems
Thursday, November 19, 2009
2:00-3:30pm Eastern

Interdisciplinary practice, essential in the field of maternal and child health given the complex issues and needs of this diverse population, is a collaborative approach applied in the organization and delivery of health and human services, training, policy, and research. This webinar presents results of an MCHB-funded study of the effects of interdisciplinary training on 208 students, fellows, and dental residents who participated in training programs at the UNC-Chapel Hill, from 2001 through 2008. Participants included: (1) trainees from the five MCHB-funded training programs (Public Health, Nutrition, Social Work, Pediatric Dentistry, LEND) who participated in a year-long series of interdisciplinary leadership workshops in addition to their regular coursework N=99); (2) trainees from public health and LEND (two interdisciplinary MCHB-funded training programs) who did not participate in the leadership workshops (N=109). Interdisciplinary training was operationalized in two ways, reflected in the two groups of study participants. The first group participated in a year-long interdisciplinary leadership workshop, as a supplement to their basic training program activities. The second group engaged in the standard curriculum or course of study for their particular programs. A web-based survey was supplemented by selected in-depth interviews with workshop participants to provide insights on how interdisciplinary training has influenced the attitudes and practices of these trainees, the barriers to interdisciplinary practice that they report, and their roles in program, organizational, and policy development.
